Fall Meeting Recap

On October 4 & 5, 2022, the Canadian Woodlands Forum (CWF), with our host, Acadian Timber, held the 2022 Fall Meeting at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Edmundston, NB. The theme for this year’s meeting was “Managing Forest for Multiple Values”.

The program offered the 140 attendees from across the Atlantic region with an update on, and examples of, a range of important and interesting issues. Day one began with an explanation of why managing for multiple values is so critical and was reinforced with a variety of topics including an update on conservation planning within New Brunswick’s managed forests and the implementation of ecological forestry in Nova Scotia. This was followed by presentations from a local multi-generational contractor, who spoke to the challenges and successes of operations in Northern New Brunswick. One of the shared challenges for the forestry sector, the workforce shortage, was highlighted and was reinforced in presentations on trucking and silviculture. Wrapping up the afternoon on a positive note were presentations on how digitalization of the value chain can produce opportunities for more efficient decision-making within operations and how the management of working forests can lead to a net-zero carbon footprint. The program continued into the evening with a great reception and dinner, and where the group recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of the Northern Hardwoods Research Institute during their first 10 years of operation. Chris Ward, Assistant Deputy Minister, capped off the evening with an engaging update on several initiatives that the Department is focussed on.  

Day two included a tour on Acadian Timber managed freehold lands. While the fall colors had not yet reached their peak, the hardwoods hills that characterize the region were in fine form and the weather was spectacular. Participants first visited the wood yard where a variety of primary forest products were laid out for examination and then moved on to a full-tree selection harvest operation in a tolerant hardwood stand. Lunch was held by water's edge at Long Lake Adventures, who served a delicious barbecue. To wrap up the field day, the group visited a cut-to-length harvest operation of a mature fir stand that had previous tending treatments.

The 2022 Fall Meeting, held in collaboration with the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre, provided a wonderful opportunity for many professionals to meet in person and connect and/or reconnect with others in the sector. Thanks to those who attended, to those who were kind and generous enough to present, and to those organizations that provided sponsorship. Le 4 et 5 octobre 2022, le Forum canadien des opérations forestières (FCOF), avec notre hôte, Acadian Timber, ont tenu la réunion d'automne 2022 à l’hôtel, Four Points Sheraton et au centre de conférence, à Edmundston, N.-B. Cette année, le thème de la réunion était "Gérer la forêt pour des valeurs multiples".

Le programme a offert, aux 140 participants de toute la région de l'Atlantique, une mise à jour et des exemples d'une gamme de questions importantes et intéressantes. La première journée a commencé par une explication des raisons pour lesquelles la gestion de valeurs multiples est si essentielle et a été renforcée par une variété de sujets, y compris une mise à jour sur la planification sur la conservation dans les forêts aménagées du Nouveau-Brunswick et la mise en œuvre de la foresterie écologique, en Nouvelle-Écosse. Cela a été suivi par des présentations d'un entrepreneur multigénérationnel local, qui a parlé des défis et des réussites des opérations dans le nord du Nouveau-Brunswick. La pénurie de main-d’œuvre est l’un des défis communs du secteur forestier, cette réalité a été soulignée et renforcée dans les présentations sur le camionnage et la sylviculture.

Pour conclure l'après-midi sur une note positive, des présentations ont montré comment la numérisation de la chaîne d’approvisionnement peut créer des opportunités pour des prises de décision plus efficaces, au sein des opérations, et comment la gestion des forêts exploitées peut conduire à une empreinte carbone nette neutre.

Le programme s'est poursuivi dans la soirée, avec une excellente réception et un dîner, et où les invités ont reconnu et célébré les réalisations de l'Institut de recherche sur les feuillus nordique depuis ses 10 premières années d'activité. Chris Ward, sous-ministre adjoint, a conclu la soirée avec une mise à jour engageante, qui expliquait les multiples initiatives du Ministère.

La deuxième journée comprenait une visite des terres gérées par Acadian Timber. Alors que les couleurs d'automne n'avaient pas encore atteint leur apogée, les collines feuillues, qui caractérisent la région, étaient en pleine forme et la température était spectaculaire. Les participants ont d'abord visité la cour à bois, où une variété de produits forestiers primaires ont été disposés pour examen, puis ils sont passés à une opération de sélection d'arbres entiers, dans un peuplement de feuillus tolérants. Le dîner a eu lieu au bord de l'eau chez « Long Lake Adventures », qui a servi un délicieux barbecue. Pour terminer la journée sur le terrain, le groupe a visité une exploitation de coupe à longueur d'un peuplement de sapins matures, qui avait déjà subi des traitements d'entretien.

La réunion d'automne 2022, tenue en collaboration avec le Centre canadien sur la fibre de bois, a été une merveilleuse occasion pour de nombreux professionnels de se rencontrer en personne et de se connecter.
