Whether you are a resource manager, woodlands personnel, landowner or forestry contractor; you won’t want to miss the first of our four part series, entitled “Canada’s Shifting Perceptions of its Resource Industries: From a Recognized Source of Jobs and Wealth to a Shameful Stigma”, presented by Dr. Herb Emery, Vaughan Chair in Regional Economics at UNB.

Dr. Herb Emery serves as the Vaughan Chair in Regional Economics, which was initiated in the late 1980’s to support and enhance understanding of key economic issues in New Brunswick and the Maritimes, and to help develop policies to increase the overall prosperity of the region. An advisor to federal and provincial policymakers, Dr. Emery focuses his research on the development of the Canadian economy and the persistence of long-standing regional disparities.

“Canada’s Shifting Perceptions of its Resource Industries: From a Recognized Source of Jobs and Wealth to a Shameful Stigma”

Canada today is a high income, high standard of living country because of the wealth generated from the exports of its abundant natural resources. Since the early 2000s, however, the perception of the value of natural resource sectors for the economy has changed.

Resource sectors are viewed as not important for the economy; devoid of innovation and productivity growth; a limiting factor on the growth of the knowledge-based industries that the nation wants and; increasingly, an embarrassing environmental legacy.

How did we get to this point of being so wrong and what are the implications for our region and country if we continue down our current path?
