Celebrating Diversity: International Women’s Day

As we highlight International Women’s Day, it’s a time to reflect on the strides made toward gender equality and the work that lies ahead, especially in traditionally male-dominated fields like forestry. This day not only celebrates the achievements of women around the globe but also serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusive practices in every industry, including forestry contracting.

Forestry has long been seen as a male-dominated field, conjuring images of lumberjacks and heavy machinery against the backdrop of vast, untamed wilderness. However, this perception is changing. Women are not only entering the field in increasing numbers but are also helping lead the change towards sustainability, conservation, and innovation.

Women represent 17% of people employed in the forest sector industry, a 1.5% increase since 2001.

The inclusion of women in forestry brings diverse perspectives, skills, and solutions to the forefront, driving the industry toward a more sustainable and balanced future. It’s a testament to the strength that lies in diversity and the untapped potential that can be harnessed when we commit to inclusive practices.

The Importance of Inclusive Practices

Inclusive practices in forestry are not just about gender diversity; they are about creating equitable opportunities for all, regardless of gender, race, age, or background. Inclusivity means:

1. Creating Safe and Welcoming Work Environments: This involves implementing policies that protect against discrimination and harassment, ensuring that the workplace is safe and respectful for everyone.

2. Promoting equal opportunities: From recruitment to advancement, ensuring that decisions are made based on merit, skills, and qualifications, free from biases.

3. Providing Support and Mentorship: Establishing programs that support the professional development of women and underrepresented groups, offering mentorship and training opportunities to help them grow within the industry.

4. Celebrating diversity: Recognizing and valuing the unique contributions that diverse individuals bring to the table, fostering a culture of respect and collaboration.

 Moving Forward

The journey towards a more inclusive forestry industry is ongoing. It requires a collective effort from individuals, organizations, and the industry to challenge stereotypes, confront biases, and create environments where everyone could thrive.

International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we commit to inclusivity and diversity. As we celebrate the achievements of women in forestry, let’s also pledge to continue the work of building a more inclusive industry—one where every voice is heard, and every individual can contribute to shaping the future of forestry.
